Until sufficient consoles can be manufactured, scalping will remain a major contributing factor to unmet demand.

Steadily Increasing Production Throughput is Key to Filling Backorders

With each passing month, Sony refines assembly line processes to boost manufacturing volumes. Optimizing equipment setups and workflows allows more units to be produced per hour. Similarly, the company is committing greater chip fabrication capacity at partners like TSMC and Samsung. This capacity expansion enables Sony to gradually close the large backlog. However, demand still far exceeds supply for the foreseeable future given strong ongoing sales even amidst shortages. Maintaining production gains will be vital to finally fulfilling pre-orders.

Shortages May Slowly Improve But Not Fully Resolve Until 2022

The delivery of additional PS5 inventory to online and brick-and-mortar retailers will continue over the coming quarters. Certain regions receiving their first major allotments should see temporary relief. However, satisfying global demand remains an immense challenge. While supplies build, interest remains sky-high with many consumers still eager to experience the new generation of gaming. It may take into 2022 before manufacturers can fully catch up to current shortfall levels through sustained output increases. Learning from these difficulties will help Sony and others avoid such severe shortages in the future.

Lessons in Conservative Demand Forecasting and Earlier Production Planning

The unprecedented demand and supply chain complexities surrounding the PS5 launch have provided many lessons. For future console generations, manufacturers must find more accurate ways to predict interest, while building in larger safety margins. Starting mass production much earlier allows more time to maximize yields and deal with unexpected issues. The companies are also recognizing they need strategies to curb the impact of scalpers on availability.
